QUICK RESPONSE

The film is about an officer whose little brother is kidnapped by a gang, in order to use the child later to put pressure on his old brother, to force him to allow the entrance of weapons and explosives. CANDLE CAFE SHABANDAR

Founded in 1917, the Shabandar Café in Al Mutanabbi Street in the heart of the old centre of Baghdad, was a cultural landmark. Emad had shot most of his film by the end of 2006, but in March 2007, a massive car bomb destroyed Al Mutanabbi Street and killed and wounded scores of people. Emad took a small camera and went back to film. As he was leaving he was attacked and his own story is an epilogue to his film about the Shabandar Café and Mutanabbi Street

IMAD ALI

studied in the Cinema Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad. In 20067/ he participated in the second documentary course at the Independent Film and TV College in Baghdad. He made his film, A CANDLE FOR THE SHABANDAR CAFÉ, on this course. During the filming, he was injured, but eventually recovered. His film won third prize in the Student Documentary section of the 2008 Gulf Film Festival in Dubai and he has done another film, SPEAK YOUR MIND

was born in Tehran in 1985. He enjoys art and religious cinema of the Holy Prophet›s family, and has practiced photography and directing for the Ahulubait Channel. Currently he is a photographer for Karbala TV and «Alleys of Bani Hashem» is his first film.


SARI’S MOTHER

a short documentary that follows the struggle of an Iraqi mother to help for her 10-year-old son, Sari, who is dying of AIDS. The Zegum family lives in the restive Mahmudiyah area of central Iraq. They make their living by selling milk and butter. As the film opens US military helicopters are flying low over their fields. Sari’s mother administers injections to her son, whose condition is gradually deteriorating as his immune system fails. She seeks help in Baghdad’s hospitals and ministries, but discovers that the Iraqi healthcare system is in even worse condition under US occupation than before the war

JAMES LONGLEY

was born in Oregon in 1972 and studied Film and Russian at Wesleyan University and the All-Russian Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. His first feature film was the documentary GAZA STRIP, completed in 2002. James began working on IRAQ IN FRAGMENTS that same year and finished the feature in 2006, in time for the Sundance Film Festival, where it took home three awards, including Best Documentary Directing, Best Documentary Editing, and Best Documentary Cinematography. In addition the film won another prizes in different film festivals.

So she disguises as a boy to protect herself from the wolves of the streets naming herself (Hamoudi). She roams the streets of Baghdad with her old donkey to collect old empty cans and plastic materials to sell them later at the end of the day so she can buy food for her family.

Yahya Al-Allaak

was born in Baghdad, and has a Master in Cinema from New York Film Academy in Hollywood. - He has a bachelor’s degree in Cinema from Fine Arts College - University of Baghdad He has directed a film “My name is Muhammad» which is short fiction and was supported by the Royal Film commission in Jordan, Human Film, and the French Cultural Center in Jordan.

Cutting down trees and turning them into charcoal for commercial use has caused serious damage to the environment and climate in Iraq. This film presents an indifferent attitude towards the process of cutting down the trees and turning them into charcoal. Also the film reflects the state of poverty experienced by the coal workers who try to earn their livelihood, not caring about harming effects on the environment in Iraq.

Hussein Mohsen

was born in Babylon’s province, where he studied cinema at the College of Fine Arts. He directed numerous documentaries and short feature films, including his film «Coal and Ash», which is the production of the Independent Faculty of Cinema and Television in cooperation with the Goethe German Institute. He has also participated in many local and international festivals, the last of which being the Cannes film festival.
